Start Strong in 2025: 5 Tips to Beat the Back to Work Blues

Re-ignite your passion for work and get ready for your best year yet.

The Christmas holidays can be a bit of a mixed bag for us tradies. While our friends and family enjoy the chance to relax, we might have spent the “break” fielding emergency callouts, never quite able to switch off our phones. Perhaps you even found yourself on a cold evening fixing a burst pipe or repairing a power outage while everyone else was celebrating.

If you’re struggling to find the motivation to jump back into work after the holidays, you’re not alone. The transition from holiday mode to work mode can feel especially challenging when the holiday wasn’t as restful as you’d hoped. But with a little effort and the right mindset, you can make a fresh start and set the tone for a successful new year. Here are five practical ways to refresh your mindset and reignite your enthusiasm for the job.

1. Declutter and Clean Your Van: A Fresh Start on Wheels

Your van is more than just a vehicle—it’s your mobile office, your workspace, and sometimes even your break room. Over a busy year, it’s easy for tools, parts, and paperwork to pile up. A cluttered van can leave you feeling overwhelmed and disorganized before you even start your day.

Clean your van out to start the new year feeling organised
The start of the new year is a great time to give your van a sort-out.

Start the year by giving your van a thorough clean-out. Organize your tools, dispose of old receipts, and vacuum out the crumbs from countless on-the-go lunches. Invest in storage solutions if needed to keep everything tidy. A clean and organized van not only saves time on the job but also boosts your sense of professionalism

and pride in your work.

2. Do a Stock Check: Be Prepared for Success

Running out of essential supplies mid-job is stressful and wastes valuable time. Take a few hours to check your inventory, from screws and nails to spare pipes and fuses. Restock what you’re low on and consider labelling bins or drawers for easier access during busy days.

Being well-prepared will not only save you headaches but will also give you confidence as you head into the new year, knowing you’re equipped to tackle any job.

3. Sell or Recycle Old Tools: Lighten the Load

Freelancers often hold onto tools they no longer use—whether it’s that drill you replaced years ago or the toolbox that’s collecting dust. Selling or recycling unused tools can free up space and give you some extra cash to reinvest in your business.

Platforms like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or local trade groups are great places to offload tools to someone who needs them. Letting go of the old makes room for the new (and creates a good excuse to upgrade your tools), and it’s a tangible way to embrace fresh opportunities in the year ahead.

4. Get Your Tax Return Done: Clear the Mental Load

If you’ve been procrastinating on your tax return, now is the time to get it done. Freelancers often face complex tax situations, but staying on top of your finances can give you peace of mind and a sense of accomplishment.

Get your self-assessment tax return done if you've not already done so!

Set aside a day to gather your receipts, review your income, and file your return. If it feels overwhelming, consider hiring an accountant or using tax software to simplify the process. Once it’s done, you’ll feel a weight lifted, leaving you free to focus on your work without that looming task hanging over your head.

5. Reconnect with What You Love About Your Work

Getting bogged down in the grind is easy, especially after a busy year. Take a moment to reflect on why you started freelancing in the first place. Maybe it was the freedom to be your own boss, the satisfaction of fixing things, or the joy of helping needy customers.

Reignite your passion by setting small, achievable goals for the year. Whether it’s learning a new skill, upgrading a tool, or even just planning to take one full weekend off each month, having something to look forward to can boost your enthusiasm.

You might also consider reaching out to past clients for testimonials or reviewing photos of jobs you’re particularly proud of. Seeing the impact of your hard work can remind you of the value you bring to others.

Bonus Tip: Plan for Rest and Boundaries

Now is the perfect time to set boundaries for the coming year. Schedule regular time off to recharge and stick to it. If possible, have a dedicated work phone that you can turn off during non-working hours. Protecting your downtime is essential to maintaining long-term motivation and avoiding burnout.

Starting the new year strong isn’t about tackling everything at once—it’s about taking small, intentional steps to set yourself up for success. By decluttering your space, preparing your tools, and reconnecting with your passion, you can head into the year with a clear mind and a renewed sense of purpose.

Here’s to a year of productivity, growth, and a little more balance. You’ve got this! 💪
